As Seen In

I thought this might be of interest to some of you. It's a partial list of various publications that articles have been written about Palm Desert's public art and program. Supervise program and project management, which includes public art acquisition and maintenance, art gallery exhibitions and receptions, rotating sculpture exhibition on EI Paseo Drive and special events related to art and cultural programs; development, maintenance and supervision of three web sites; development and creation of national, regional and local marketing program; participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and direct, coordinate and review the program planning initiatives; participate in the development and administration of the program's budget; forecast funding needs for staffing, equipment, materials, supplies and recommend adjustments as necessary.

Director of University Galleries
Responsible for the organization and administration of the University's gallery system, consisting of four galleries, which presents local, regional, national and internationally recognized artists to the Inland Northwest cultural community. Curatorial duties of exhibitions; publication of all publicity materials, i.e., brochures, catalogues, posters, newspaper, radio, television production for public service announcements and articles; budgetary development and evaluation; grant development, fundraising strategies and development, contractual arrangements with artists and lenders of artworks; coordinating all aspects of public art projects from conception to completion, public relations with universities, museums, galleries and cultural institutions, national, regional and local; and developed, maintained the University's permanent art collection. Teaching responsibilities as required by Departmental needs. Previously taught, Drawing, Design, Contemporary Art Issues, Art in the Humanities, Professional Practices, Gallery Visits, Alternative Media, Gallery Techniques and Painting.

Director Exhibit Touring Services Program
Exhibit Touring Services was a program that toured over 50 exhibitions to museums, universities, libraries, and alternative exhibiting spaces and other presenting venues, throughout the United States and selected countries internationally. The primary responsibilities of the position entailed setting priorities for the program, developing and implementing program policies, budget analysis, developing marketing strategies, developing contractual agreements with exhibit lenders, identifying and pursuing potential funding sources, i.e.. researching and writing grants, fundraising strategies for corporate sponsorship, supervise staff, supervise Web Site, developing advertising image via brochures, advertisements, public service announcements, personal media interviews; identify, analyze and solicit potential profitable exhibits for the ETS inventory; develop and maintain relationships with potential exhibit lenders; interface with peers at museums and gallery personnel, artists and members of the cultural community; develop and present various financial reports to University officials

Chairman of Department of Art
Responsibilities include managing departmental budget, assigning faculty teaching loads, committee assignments, hiring and supervising teaching assistants and part-time employees, research and development of reports to administration, planning and implementing new curriculum, special fundraising projects and activities, researching and writing grants, interfacing with other Fine Arts Chairs, and assisting with cooperative projects and programs with other Fine Arts Chairs, and assisting with cooperative projects and programs with area arts organizations. Supervised maximum of 18 full and part-time employees who worked in the Gallery Program, Exhibit Touring Services Program and the Department of Art.

1978/79 - Arts Coordinator, Spokane Arts Commission and
Foundation, City Hall, Spokane, WA.

Responsible for implementing programs and policies of Commission and Foundation Board Members. Projects and programs organized and implemented during this time were: The Expansion Arts Program which was a series of four mini-festivals of performing and visual arts in Spokane neighborhoods; Artists Studio Tour of area artists; Spokane Art Awards Program; and Artists Registry for all performing visual and literary artists; the Neighborhood Classical Concert Series of six classical concerts in neighborhood centers; community coordination efforts for Artsplan; coordinated visual art exhibits at the U.S. Pavilion and local banks; the Summer Walls Project mural; and wrote new releases, coordinated several television events with area artists.

History of Professional Activities

4/2002 to Present:
There are three major areas that I have focused on with the Palm Desert's Public Art Program (PAP), A) conceptualizing and implementing a national, regional marketing campaign to promote and elevate the visibility of the Public Art Program in the professional art world; B) reorganizing and improving the internal departmental administration of the PAP by addressing many of its activities and functions; C) administration of the many public art projects by both private developers and the City's Redevelopment Agency.
* Created and implemented institutional advertisements in national/international art journals, Art in America, ArtNews and Sculpture Magazine, Art Ltd., promoting both the public art collection and El Paseo exhibition.
* Developed an artist registry composed of artists with national/ international stature, worked with major New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Seattle, Portland galleries, including Pace Wildenstein, Gagosian LA & New York, Marlborough, LA Louver, Margo Leavin, Bobbie Greenfield, BGH, Chac Mool, Imago and BuschlenMowatt Galleries, to name a few. * Created a network and working relationship with major Southern California galleries in order to gain access to their artists for possible inclusion to our public art collection and participation in the El Paseo exhibition
* Redesigned the look of the front page of PAP's web site, (www.palmdesertart.org) to include better navigation, showcase more of the pieces in the public art collection, the El Paseo exhibition and the current exhibition being presented in the North Wing Gallery with animation cells that rotate up to eighteen different pieces.
* Developed a yearly exhibition schedule for the North Wing Gallery for 2002/2003 season compose of professional artists residing in the Coachella Valley.
* Created a new brochure on both the collection and the El Paseo exhibition. It will include four maps of the different art tours in the city.
* Administered the El Paseo exhibition and coordinated all activities with John Nagus, exhibition curator, artists and galleries.

*Conceived, developed, co-wrote a book on the Art and Architecture of Palm Desert with Jim West. Book is available through Barnes & Noble, Borders, Palm Springs Art Museum and the Palm Desert Visitor's Center.

*Conceived, supervised and promoted a two day regional Public Art Forum consisting of two keynote speakers, Gail Goldman and Cliff Garten, also several panels of important artists, architects, public art and museum officials speaking on various current topics facing public art administrators and artists on the University of California San Bernadino Palm Desert campus. There were over 200 attendees from San Diego, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Ventura and other Southern California cities.

* Expanded PAP's mailing lists to include over 200 national arts organizations, 100 professional artists of national stature, numerous newspapers, art journals, various publications related to the visual arts and newsletters,
* Reorganized the existing artists slide registry into categories that can be easily accessed by staff and developers
* Digialized the slide registry, which is posted on our web site, www.palmdesertartistregistry.com
* Researched and developed a file bank of potential private and public grant sources for public art projects and for a national documentary on the history public art programs
* Worked with private developers and the Redevelopment Agency to identify and commission artists for various projects
2001- Consultant for the Washington State Arts Commission on assessing condition of public art collection. Art researcher for the Foundation of Eastern Washington University. Art restorer of 100 yr. old totem pole for private collector.
2000 - Designed, created and launched "richardtwedtfineart .com" personal web site for my artwork. Currently, the web site has been changed to a blog titled: www.richardtwedtfineartandvideos.blogspot.com.
2000- Travel: San Antonio, TX., visited museums, galleries, and cultural sites.
1999- Travel: Athens, Greece, Istanbul, Turkey, New York, New York, visited numerous museums and ancient sites in Athens and Istanbul and attended the Americans for the Arts conference in New York. Professional Highlights: Developed and received several grants to bring New York artist, Mike Berg, from Istanbul Turkey to Eastern for a public lecture and his reception for the opening of his exhibition in the Gallery of M.
1998- Travel: Los Angeles, CA, and Puerto Vallerta, Mex., visited museums and galleries in L.A. and attended the College Art Association's conference. Visited cultural sites in Puerto Vallerta. 1984/88 - - Purchased new print acquisitions for Eastern Washington University's Permanent Collection: Sam Francis, Claes Oldenburg, James Dine, Ed Ruscha, Sol Lewitt, Robert Rauschenberg, Wayne Thiebaud, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella. - Research extended over six months with galleries and numerous art professionals in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, and Seattle. - Developed and wrote guidelines and grants for The Center for Experimental Art, an off-campus downtown Spokane facility that would present performance art, video and computer art, experimental dance forms, synthesized music, poetry readings, multi- media performances, and house permanent video, computer and new music libraries. - Assisted the Spokane Ballet's Annual Art Auction with exhibiting donated artworks prior to the auction at The Higher Education Center Gallery. -Assisted with organizing area-wide six week art promotion at The Crescent Department Store which decorated all outside windows and interior displays with art works from over 45 Iocal artists. -assisted the producer from Seattle's Educational television channel conducting a video documentary on Northwest Artists using narrative imagery in their work; locate applicable Eastern Washington artists. -Volunteered consulting services to several area artists starting a commercial arts space housing galleries, art shipping/packing services, artists studios, newspaper, and food service on economic feasibility of venture, mix of services to offer and marketing practices. -Six trips to Portland and Seattle to visit galleries, museums; highlights were the Robert Motherwell Retrospective, States of War, Confrontations, Illuminists, New York/Seattle, Strange exhibitions. -Guest Curator, "Modern Masters Collection," Higher Education Center Gallery, Eastern Washington University, 9/85 - 11/85. Eastern's Gallery of Art program joined the Exhibition Touring Service organization that developed as a result of the conference which includes over 30 universities and institutions throughout the Northwest. - Wrote and developed a grant proposal to the Washington State Arts Commission for programming support of the Richard Posner Glass Installation exhibition at EWU. -Video art presentation at Cheney Cowles Memorial Museum. -Assisted EWU's Foundation in purchase of Andy Warhol's "Endangered Species Suite" for the University’s permanent collection - Full-day workshop and presentation of video artists and music at Spokane Falls Community College’s Gallery of Art. - Organized the Spokane Center Gallery Guild composed of a group of influential Spokane professional people to assist with better exposure of the visual arts in the Inland Empire. 1981/83 - Travel- Three trips to Seattle and Portland to establish contacts with major museum and gallery personnel, including the Portland Center for the Visual Arts, Portland Museum of Art, Seattle Museum of Modern Art, Henry Gallery of Art at University of Washington, and numerous commercial galleries-Member of EWU committee for 1 % projects through the Washington State Arts Commission. Curatorial responsibilities for EWU's permanent art collection. -Consultant to Touchstone Center for the Visual Arts on a variety of professional concerns, i.e grants, exhibition methods, techniques, and publicity. -Participated in several group art exhibitions, including Annual Art Faculty Show, The Great American Toaster Show at Portland's Artists Space, The Boredom Show at Gallery Seven in Spokane, and The Generic Show at Spokane Falls Community College. 1981/82 - -Organized the permanent exchange exhibition to Eastern's sister university, Dongguk University in Seoul, Korea. Exhibition included 13 student artists and two members of the Art faculty, totaling 19 works of art valued at $3,500. -Wrote and developed preliminary NEA grant proposal which was presented to NEA personnel in Washington, D.C. by Eastern's Grants Officer. A tentative commitment for $20-25,000 for the project was offered by the NEA people at the time, however, upon closer inspection, the project was determined not to have the necessary support to follow through on. .Organized and curated the "Pacific Northwest Drawing Invitational" which included 35 of the most important Northwest artists. Exhibition was custom crated and offered to universities and institutions through the U.S. as a traveling exhibition. 1982-83 exhibition was scheduled at Kent State University, University of Wisconsin at Stout, Lawrence University, University of Southern Maine, University of Connecticut, University of Tennessee, and Atlanta College of Art. 1983-84 exhibition was offered to member universities and institutions of the Northwest association "Exhibition Touring service"
